Locus - Convergence 2020
Vineyard Story
Locus, or place in Latin, is more than just an estate. A truly itinerant project, Locus draws its raison d'être and its essence from the incredible diversity of the oceanic terroirs of the Loire Atlantique. Locus offers only wines made from Folle Blanche and Melon de Bourgogne grapes, and as a fervent defender of these historic varieties from the Pays Nantais region, is committed to capturing all their most beautiful variations. There is no doubt that Muscadet can lay claim to having some of the finest white wines in the Loire Valley.
Whether they come from the great regions of Sèvre & Maine, Coteaux de la Loire, Côtes de Grandlieu or Crus Communaux such as Clisson or Gorges, these local Muscadets offer unique and unprecedented variations depending on the terroir in which they are grown. In addition to the vines and their environment, the tradition of ageing on lees, coupled with the use of underground vats, reinforces the personality of Muscadet wines.
Located on the fabulous terroirs of Cru Clisson, Locus' vocation is to explore the specific expressions of the various soils and climates that make up the vineyard. We're convinced that it's the places themselves, through their uniqueness, that allow us to bear witness to the contrasts and incredible richness of the wines of the Pays Nantais.
Appellation: Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine
AOC Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is a prestigious appellation within the Loire Valley in France, known for producing high-quality white wines exclusively made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. It is one of the sub-appellations of the larger Muscadet AOC, and it derives its name from two rivers, the Sèvre Nantaise and the Maine, which flow through the region.
Grape Variety: 100% Melon de Bourgogne, a neutral white grape that is excellent at expressing terroir.
Location: Centered around the city of Nantes, near the Atlantic Ocean. The maritime influence is a defining factor in the wines' freshness and salinity.
Climate: Cool, maritime climate, ideal for maintaining the grape's natural acidity.
Soils: Diverse soil types, including granite, gneiss, schist, and clay, contribute to the wines' minerality and complexity.
Sur Lie Aging: Many Muscadet Sèvre et Maine wines undergo sur lie aging, meaning the wine remains on its lees (dead yeast cells) for several months after fermentation.
This technique:
- Enhances mouthfeel and body.
- Adds subtle notes of bread, yeast, or nuttiness.
- Contributes to the wine’s freshness and longevity
